Under supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) in the WHL and guidance of the Large Carnivore Research Coordinator (Lead Person), the position provides dedicated core support to the statewide mountain lion program for population monitoring and ecological research. Position will assist with field research activities, data collection, camera-trap deployment and monitoring (i.e., mountain lions); biological sample collection (e.g., live animals, necropsies); telemetry and camera data processing and data entry. The position will also assist to maintain historic and current databases; public education and response to public inquiries; computer-aided literature reviews; webpage updates; drafting technical reports, which may include basic scientific calculations; and provide overall laboratory support to the WHL. The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Office setting requires using computer keyboard at least several hours a day and involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Must attend occasional meetings. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items up to 40 lbs. Ability to drive for long-distances and/or for several hours at a time, as needed. In addition to working with Sacramento-based staff, may interact with Regional staff and members of the public, in the field, via e-mail, and telephone. Ability to travel and perform field work throughout the State, as needed. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus (adequate current antibody titer) or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations. NOTE: Willingness to work long irregular hours. Weekend and holiday work frequently required.
