The PR Specialist, Policy Communications will be part of the state and local function of Amazon’s U.S. Policy Communications team. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of delivering results on a range of high-profile issues for a complex company or organization. They will be able to help build and execute successful communications campaigns related to public policy at the state level, deftly manage inbound media inquiries relating to policy issues, and drive awareness among audiences of Amazon’s positive impact on customers and the communities where we operate.

Key job responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a broad range of external communications programs and events in support of Amazon’s state policy goals
  • Establish and foster local and regional media relationships by serving as a trusted source and educator about Amazon
  • Seek out and/or create opportunities to further Amazon’s public engagement on public policy issues at the state level
  • Create and execute communications campaigns alongside state policy partners to educate policymakers and media about specific state and local policy issues impacting Amazon businesses
  • Deliver communications counsel to colleagues on the state public policy team on both short- and long-term challenges and opportunities, earning trust across many parts of Amazon’s business
  • Lead and execute special events, including reporter briefings, media and policymaker events, etc.
  • Support creative content creation, ranging from opinion pieces and blog articles to digital and print ads
  • Drive issues management programs with a policy component and serve as key communications counselor on crisis issues
  • Develop creative, effective approaches to difficult communications challenges

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of recent professional communications or public relations experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Communications experience with public policy issues working for a technology or logistics company, NGO, and/or government agency
  • Whether writing or speaking, able to explain complex ideas clearly and accurately to a layperson audience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as a spokesperson on complex issues
  • Ability to dive deep on public policy issues
  • Experience managing reactive issues
  • Experience working with both national and local press
  • Understanding of the legislative process

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $68,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $147,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
